Learn how to make this colourful crochet bluebell flower cot mobile, to spark up any baby room/nursery.

Pin it now, make it later!

Although both of my children are big now, I still love baby related items, especially when they are colourful and fun. This cot mobile is one of my favourite item I made for babies. The best part is, that you can use any colours, making it perfect for every colour scheme. This one I made has the spring vibes, but I can imagine it with only white flowers in a elegant, conservative baby room.

Caution!

Please be very cautious when you make toys for babies or children under the age of 3. If you sew parts on it, make sure they are secure and safe.

I recommend, to embroider the eyes, as the plastic safety eyes can be dangerous. My tutorial for embroidery eyes can be found here

Level: beginner friendly

Size of the finished flower if using the same yarn and hook size: 8cm

Please keep in mind, that I am using the yarn under technique. With this, the stitches are smaller and tighter, making the finished product smaller in size. If you yarn over, your finished product will be bigger. If you would like to achieve the same size as me and you yarn over, consider using a size smaller hook.

Fabric stiffener:

Mix 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of cornflour (corn starch), heat it on medium heat, stirring continuously. When it looks like jelly, take it off the heat, and stir in a 1/4 cup cold water. Put it aside and let it cool down.

If it become too stiff when it cools down, add a bit of cold water and stir it well.

Rnd 1: ch3, put 2 dc in next st, (dc, dc-inc) x11, sl st to top of ch3  [36]

Rnd 2: ch3, dc in next st, inc in next, dc in next 3 sts, fpdc, (3dc, inc, 3dc, fpdc) x5, sl st to top of ch3    [48]

From now on we will be working with hdc

Rnd 7: ch2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in next st, 2dc in next 3 sts, 2hdc in next 2 sts, sc  in next st (2hdc in next 2 sts, 2dc innext 3 sts, 2hdc in next 2 sts, sc) x5, sl st to top of ch2

Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew

Using the long tail, sew the green leaves to the flower.

5 pastel colour crochet flowers

Stamen:

Use colour A

Tip: only close the MR, after the last sl st made into the ring

leave a long tail before you make the MR as we will need it later to sew the stamen to the flower

Make a MR, ch29, starting from second chain from hook, sc in every st, sl st to MR, ch29 again, starting from second chain from hook, sc in every st, sl st to MR, cut your yarn, leaving a long tail, and close the ring.

Sew the stamen inside the flower

At this point I like to use the fabric stiffener, but you don’t have to. It makes the flowers more solid and firm, but even without it the flowers are ok on the cot mobile.

I put fabric stiffener only on the inside of the flower, so the yarn doesn’t lose its shine on the outside. Shape the flower and leave it to dry for 24 hours. I personally have a small snow globe which is the right size and the right shape so I put my flower on it to dry.

Assembling the cot mobile:

It depends on the cot mobile base you are using how you connect the flowers to it. If you are using the same as me,

Leaving a long tail, I chained 50 for the side flowers and 40 for the middle one.  Cut your yarn, but make sure you have a very long tail, about 24-30 inches . (60-75cm). Remove your hook, but do not fasten off your yarn. Pull the loop and the long tail you cut through the loop on the cot mobile, insert your hook back and sl st to the next 5 sts.

Cut the yarn, and weave in the ends.

Using the tail on the other side, sew your flower to the chain.

Repeat these steps with all the flower.

I recommend you watching the video to see how I connected the chain to the cot mobile base.
