Crochet Rainbow Earrings

Learn how to make a colourful rainbow earring by following this easy crochet pattern for beginners. These funky pair of rainbow earrings are perfect for gifting or selling at craft fairs.

Pin it now, make it later!

Imagine it is May, and the rain is pouring for like 3 days solid. I have to tell you it is not that difficult to imagine for people in the UK. Anyways. After 3 days of dark, and cold, the sun peaks from behind the clouds. As the hours pass, she peaks more and more, until finally the rain gives up and stops. The sun shines in it’s glory, but the rain leaves behind a beautiful rainbow, which makes people smile, and feel the beauty of nature.

That’s how I want you to feel when you are wearing this pair of handmade crochet rainbow earrings. I want you to remember there is always a rainbow after a storm.

Caution!

Please be very cautious when you make toys for babies or children under the age of 3. If you sew parts on it, make sure they are secure and safe.

I recommend, to embroider the eyes, as the plastic safety eyes can be dangerous. My tutorial for embroidery eyes can be found here

Level: Beginner

Size of the finished rainbow if using the same yarn and hook size approximately: 10cm

Please keep in mind, that I am using the yarn under technique. With this, the stitches are smaller and tighter, making the finished product smaller in size. If you yarn over, your finished product will be bigger. If you would like to achieve the same size as me and you yarn over, consider using a size smaller hook.

I created some backing cards for the earring, you can download them by clicking here

Earring:

Start with colour A

Tip: When you change colour, make sure you leave a long tail with your new and your old yarn as well. Just drop all the old yarn tails, we will use them later.

Make sure you leave a long tail, before you make the slip knot, and chain 6

Rnd 1: starting from second chain from hook, sc in first 4 sts, 4sc in last st, continue on the other side of the chain, sc in last 4 sts, make sure you crochet over the yarn tail. In last st chaing to colour B  [12]

Rnd 2: ch1 and turn, sc in first 4 sts, put 2sc in next 4 sts, sc in last 4 sts, in last st change to colour C  [16]

Rnd 3: ch1 and turn, sc in first 4 sts, (sc, inc) x4, sc in last 4 sts, in last st change to colour D  [20]

Rnd 4: ch1 and turn, sc in first 4 sts, (2sc, inc) x4, sc in last 4 sts, in last st change to colour E [24]

Rnd 5: ch1 and turn, sc in first 4 sts, (3sc, inc) x4, sc in last 4 sts  [28]

Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail.

Now you will need to tie up all the yarn tails. Get a tapestry needle and go through the rainbow from top to bottom, creating a loop.

Go trough that loop from the other side and pull it tight.

Tie up all the yarn tails. After you reach the middle, you will have to go through from bottom to top on the earring with the needle so the knots we create will be on the same side.

Cut a piece of yarn, about 30cm (13 inch) of every colour, fold it in half and put it through the tapestry needle, so you have a loop.

Go through the earring from bottom to top

go through the loop with your needle

and pull it tight.

Cut the yarn tails to the desired size and tie a knot at the end of every string so they don’t split.

Assembling the Earrings:

Twist the loop on the fish hook with 90 degree.

Open your jump ring with your plier(s), put it through the middle top stitch of the earring

Put the fish hook on it

close the jump ring back
